How Well Do You Handle Conflict?, 04-Mar-2009

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable. But it doesn't have to be devastating - it can be turned into a positive and relationship-building experience. It really depends on how you assertively respond (rather than react) to it.

Here are some great ideas for making conflict work for you.

  1. Deal with the difficult behaviour, not the person
  2. Respond to the difficult behaviour rather than reacting to it
  3. Stay calm and don't get flustered
  4. Ignore personal comments or insults
  5. Ask questions to ensure you understand the issue
  6. LISTEN ACTIVELY
  7. Focus on the problem by acknowledging the problem
  8. Use "I" messages as opposed to "you" accusations
  9. Repeat back the issue to the person, in a constructive way
  10. Focus on the facts, not the emotions
  11. Use assertive non-verbal signals such as direct eye contact, upright stance, avoid fidgeting, and if the situation is getting out of hand you may need to leave it or seek additional help

Realisations Consultancy can help you handle conflict effectively with a program tailor-made to meet your needs.
